Situational irony: Phony people
Danny remarks early on that “my father was an eye-smiler. It meant he never gave me a fake smile.” He goes on to state “A mouth-smile is different. You can fake a mouth-smile any time you want”. This foreshadows meeting Mr Hazell who is the epitome of being a mouth-smiler.
Verbal irony: Danny’s emotions
When planning the prank on Mr Hazell, he remarks that he felt ‘petrified’ at the thought of their actions. Yet despite this, he had a “gloriousfeeling of excitement”, which is at odds to his previous emotion of fear.
