Chapter 6 - Section 6.6 - The Law of Cosines - 6.6 Exercises - Page 521: 36

Answer

2.46

Work Step by Step

Step 1. Use symmetry to split the area into two triangles with one shown in the figure (not to scale) Step 2. Use the Law of Sines, $\frac{sinC}{4}=\frac{sin30^{\circ}}{3}$ which leads to $\angle C=138.2^{\circ}$ and $\angle A=180-30-138.2=11.8^{\circ}$ Step 3. The area of this triangle is $A=\frac{4\times3sinA}{2}=1.23$ Step 4. The total area is $2\times A=2.46$
