Using the equation x+6y=2, we subtract 6y to obtain x=2-6y. We plug x=2-6y into 5x+4y=36 to obtain that 5(2-6y)+4y=36. We solve to find that y=-1. We now substitute y=-1 into x=2-6y to obtain that x equals 8.
