Chapter 1 - Section 1.8 - Inverse Functions - Exercise Set - Page 272: 97

Answer

The function $s\left( t \right)$ is a one to one function.

Work Step by Step

In 1961, “freedom 7 was the first spacecraft that carried the first American into space”. The flight time was $15\min $ and the maximum height of the space craft was $116\text{ miles}$. The spacecraft function, $s$ with respect to time can be written as $s\left( t \right)$ in miles. But, the space craft is moved in the upward direction. At a different time, the spacecraft will attain a different altitude. Hence, the function $s\left( t \right)$ of the spacecraft shows the height of the spacecraft as a function of time, and it is one to one function.
