Chapter 10 - Radical Expressions and Equations - Chapter Review - Page 654: 10

Work Step by Step

The hypotenuse is 18.5 and one of the legs is 6. Find the other leg using $a^{2}$+$b^{2}$=$c^{2}$. Plug in the leg for A and the hypotenuse for C: $a^{2}$+$b^{2}$=$c^{2}$ $6^{2}$+$b^{2}$=$18.5^{2}$ -simplify the exponents- 36 + $b^{2}$=342.25 -subtract 36 from both sides- $b^{2}$=306.25 -find the square root of 306.25 in order to solve for b- b=17.5 The other leg is 17.5.
