Had you jumped from a very massive ship, or a platform that was fixed in place, you would have made it. Instead, you jumped from a canoe whose mass was comparable to your own, and which therefore recoiled at roughly the same speed that you moved forward. Jumping from this backward-moving platform reduced your forward velocity, giving you a refreshing dip.
