Chapter 9 - Solutions - Additional Questions and Problems - Page 366: 9.100

Answer

The solubility of most solids in water is greater as temperature increases. But, the increase in temperature causes an inverse effect on the solubility of gases, decreasing the solubility in water. The solubility of a gas in a liquid is related to the pressure of that gas above the liquid. The higher this pressure, the greater the solubility.

Work Step by Step

The effect of temperature on solubility appears on page 335, topic: "Effect of Temperature on Solubility" The effect of pressure on solubility is stated on Henry's Law (Page 336)
