Chapter 1 - Mid-Chapter Check Point - Page 165: 11

Answer

Does not have a solution.

Work Step by Step

We have $$3x + 1 -(x-5) = 2x - 4$$ As we see there is a minus sign before the parenthesis which is like a $-1$ multiplying it. So doing the multiplication in order to eliminate the parenthesis $$3x + 1 -1*(x) -1*(-5) = 2x - 4$$ $$3x + 1 -x +5 = 2x - 4$$ Taking $x$ terms to the left side of the equation and numbers to the right side $$3x - x - 2x = -4 - 1 - 5$$ Simplifying $$0 = -10$$ As we know 0 is not equal to 10 so our equation does not have a solution.
