The discriminant is the part of the quadratic formula inside the square root ($b^2-4ac$). It gives information about the number of real roots of its quadratic polynomial. A discriminant greater than $0$ has $2$ roots, a discriminant equal to $0$ has $1$ root, and a discriminant less than $0$ has no real root.
