    What does Obi's ignorance of financial matters betray both his upbringing and his education?

    When Obi succeeds in his professional ambitions, he is continually surprised by the financial obligations that others seem to already know about (the others mostly being white Europeans). This shows the disparity between his formal education and his social one. His social education is in an entirely different world from the one in which he has arrived, and he has very little practical knowledge of his new lifestyle. This is another reason why Obi is the object of scorn of both Nigerians (being a 'too know) and Mr. Green (for being 'educated').
