Mr. Mark reacts strongly towards Miss Tomlinson's presence, as he was clearly hoping to meet with Obi alone because he is there to discuss a bribe. Because Miss Tomlinson is there, he resorts to speaking in Ibo, which also has the effect of identifying him to Obi as a kinsman. Miss Tomlinson does overhear parts of what happen, which put Obi on edge, as he is still not certain that Miss Tomlinson is not a spy for Mr. Green.
