Let's simplify the numerator $(u+1)^2-1$. This can be expressed as a difference of squares. Since $a^2-b^2=(a+b)(a-b)$ $(u+1)^2-1^2=(u+1+1)(u+1-1)$. This is equal to u(u+2). Now when we cancel u from top and bottom we get u+2 and subbing 0 the answer is 2.
