The Art of Racing in the Rain Quotes

What Eve said was not out of line, as most dogs cannot help themselves... but that sort of thing doesn't apply to me.

Enzo, Chapter 7

Eve sees Enzo as dangerous and she fears the dog’s presence around her small child. Eve fears that one day Enzo will bite Zoe while playing and she is sure that it will happen because for her, every animal has a wild side waiting to come out. Enzo however distances himself from other dogs through his intelligence and capability to think almost like a human. While Enzo can’t deny that some dogs are unable to control themselves, he claims that it is not the case for him because he is superior to other dogs.

I had always wanted to love Eve as Denny loved her, but I never had because I was afraid. She was my rain. She was my unpredictable element. She was my fear. But a racer should not be afraid of rain; a racer should embrace the rain.

Enzo, Chapter 7

Enzo reveals that the reason why he felt as if he couldn’t connect with Eve was because she was unpredictable. She represented change and a new period in Denny’s life and Enzo was unsure how everything will affect him and the way he used to live until then with his owner. Eve was a threat to the relationship between Enzo and Denny and it took Enzo a long time to realize that in order to live happily, he must accept the change. Opposing it would not do him any better and just like a person can’t control the weather, Enzo realizes that he can’t control whether Eve will remain in Denny’s life or not. The only thing he can do however is to adapt to the new conditions and try to make the best of it.

"Sometimes I think you actually understand me," he said. "It's like there's a person inside there. Like you know everything."

Denny, chapter 11

Despite knowing that Enzo is a dog, Denny talks with him as if the dog could understand him and communicate back. Unknowingly to him, Enzo was indeed able to understand what Denny was saying but was unable to communicate back because he did not had the means to do it. This didn’t stopped Denny from communicating with Enzo and it did not stop Enzo from trying to let Denny know that he understands him. This quote is important because it points towards the idea that Denny loves Enzo and that he doesn’t see him as a stupid dog, but rather he sees him as a companion and someone who can actually understand him and help him.
