Chapter 24 - The Wave Nature of Light - Questions - Page 706: 21

Answer

Polarized lenses can also reduce glare off surfaces, which regular sunglasses cannot.

Work Step by Step

Polarized sunglasses reduce the intensity of incoming unpolarized light, which plain tinted sunglasses can also do. However, in addition to that, vertically polarized lenses also completely block horizontally-polarized light, which occurs in light reflected from horizontal surfaces. Regular tinted sunglasses can’t selectively reduce glare from reflecting surfaces.
