Chapter 6 - Force and Motion-II - Problems - Page 147: 89d

Answer

311 Newtons

Work Step by Step

The first thing we need to do is find Ff,max or the maximum value of the force of static friction. To do so we need the value of the Normal Force. Since there are no external vertical forces on the cabinet, the weight is equal to the Normal Force. Therefore, the maximum value of the frictional force is 556N * 0.68 = 378 N Since the force applied on it is larger than this, it will begin to move and then the kinetic friction will act on it. The value of this force is 556N * 0.56 = 311 Newtons
