The total amount of energy in the universe stays the same. This is energy conservation as stated in the physics sense. When we say that it is good policy to "conserve energy", we really mean not to squander it, i.e., transforming it from a more useful to a less useful form, as discussed on page 122. With the world's energy needs continually growing, we can't afford to do that.
