Chapter 15 - Electric Charge, Forces, and Fields - Learning Path Questions and Exercises - Multiple Choice Questions - Page 554: 14

Answer

(b) left

Work Step by Step

The direction of electric field is the direction in which a force will act on positively charged particle. So when a (+) charged particle is placed on y=0 and x=+40cm, both electrons will attract the charge by same amount. The magnitude will be equal of both the forces. The vertical components will be equal and opposite and will be cancelled out but the horizontal components will add up in left directions.
