Chapter 8 - Basic Concepts of Chemical Bonding - Exercises - Page 335: 8.25c

Answer

The predictions from ionic radii are correct.

Work Step by Step

From table 8.2, the lattice energies of the four compounds are: - $LiCl$: 834 kJ/mol - $KF$: 808 kJ/mol - $NaCl$: 788 kJ/mol - $NaBr$: 732 kJ/mol Therefore, from table 8.2, we can arrange the compounds in decreasing lattice energy as follows: $$LiCl\gt KF\gt NaCl\gt NaBr$$ From part b), we arrange the compounds in decreasing lattice energy as follows: $$LiCl\gt KF\gt NaCl\gt NaBr$$ Comparing 2 results, we can see that the predictions from ionic radii are correct.
