For red blood cell synthesis the following nutrients are essential: Vitamin B12, folic acid/folate ( Vit. B9), and iron. Other nutrients that are believed to aid in erythropoiesis are copper and pyridoxine (Vit B 6).

Some sources of these nutrients are the following foods: Iron(Fe) : meat, beans, nuts, spinach, iron-fortified foods. Vit. B12: Organ meats --tongue, spleen, liver etc--., fish. shellfish, dairy products Folate: Cereals, baked goods, leafy vegetables, bananas, melons, lemons and organ meats. Note. Hemoglobin is a protein so amino acids must be available for its synthesis.
