Chapter R - Section R.2 - Operations on Real Numbers - R.2 Exercises - Page 20: 54

Work Step by Step

In order to find the distance between two points, we can find the absolute value of the difference of the numbers (taken in either order). $E=-\frac{3}{2}$ $C=5$ $|(-\frac{3}{2}-5)|=|-(\frac{3}{2}+5)|=|-(\frac{3}{2}+\frac{10}{2})|=|-(\frac{13}{2})|=|-\frac{13}{2}|$ The absolute value of a number $a$ is equal to $a$ if $a\geq0$ and is equal to $-a$ if $a\lt0$. $-\frac{13}{2}\lt0$, so $|-\frac{13}{2}|=-(-\frac{13}{2})=\frac{13}{2}$ Therefore, the distance between the two points is $\frac{13}{2}=6.5$.
