Since three times the smaller number plus four times the larger number is 137, we obtain: $3x+4(x+1)=137$ $3x+4x+4=137$ $7x+4=137$ $7x=137-4$ $7x=133$ $x=\frac{133}{7}=19$ Therefore, the smaller number is 19 while the larger number is $19+1=20$.
