Ready Player Two Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Oni-OASIS Neural Interface

The new technology that is at the center of this sequel is the one that allows humans to completely immerse themselves into the simulated reality, along with all the five senses. It is a technology that can potentially completely replace the human reality for a fictional one, which in itself, is a two-ended sword, both potentially harmful and useful. The name in itself, Oni, is symbolic and based on Japanese folklore, Oni being a name for demonic entities which conceal themselves behind other things.

AI-artificial intelligence

The motif of artificial intelligence is present in the novel to explore the possibilities of advancements in technology and to open up a discussion about humanity and consciousness. AI is shown to be an independent existence at the end, which gives the possibility for humanity to improve.

Seven shards

Seven shards of siren’s soul is the quest which shows to be quite self-explanatory in its name. It is a quest for the pieces of Kira’s preserved consciousness (her soul), which are used to awaken her. The number seven is symbolic in itself, and it appears throughout. It usually represents completion, unity and perfection, both in spiritual and physical aspects.

Love

Love is a motif that drives the plot. The reason that the Oni was created by Halliday is so that he can create a version of Kira for himself. Anorak, his AI version, threatens Wade and humanity so that they can bring Kira to life-in his twisted way he thought that he can make her love him, despite her making it clear that she loves Og. It is love that makes the acceptance of AI at the end seem more bearable because of the possibility of being with their loved ones forever.
