Why is Annemarie particularly scared when Mama isn't back at four o'clock in the morning?
Although the time Annemarie chose for her mother's return is somewhat arbitrary, she now realizes that the whole family is involved in activities that could be seen as illegal, something that German soldiers could arrest her mother or her Uncle Henrik for. Annemarie's fears, though she doesn't speak them, could easily involve her mother being captured or attacked by soldiers.
