Number the Stars

Number the Stars - Help me with my homework! (Chapter 11)

1. Why do you think the casket was filled with clothing and blankets instead of a body? What was the purpose of this?

2. How did Ellen feel about the jacket Peter gave her? How can you tell?

3. Why do you think Peter insisted on giving the baby medicine to keep her asleep, even though the mother begged him not to?

4. Annemarie thinks about the Rosens’ pride at the end of the chapter. What do you think she means? What do the Rosens still have, even though they’ve left almost everything behind?

5. Why do you think the author chose not to explain exactly what was in the packet Peter gave Mr. Rosen? How does this add to the mood of the story?

Thank you!

1) The casket was filled with supplies for those hiding. Its purpose was to fool the soldiers.

3) If the baby cried, it would alert nearby soldiers.

  • I think the casket was filled with clothes and blankets to hide the Rosens and make them look like they were dead if anyone checked. The purpose was to keep them safe while they escaped.

  • Ellen was probably really nervous about the jacket Peter gave her. She didn’t seem super comfortable wearing it, but it was probably a lifesaver for her.

  • Peter probably gave the baby medicine because they had to make sure she stayed quiet. He was thinking about the bigger picture, even though it was hard for the mom.

  • I think Annemarie means that the Rosens still have their dignity, their family, and their spirit, even though they’ve lost everything else. They still carry that with them.

  • The author didn’t explain what was in Peter’s packet probably to keep the tension high. It leaves us guessing and adds a bit of mystery to the story.
