Icy Sparks Summary

Icy Sparks Summary

Icy Sparks is a story about Icy who suffers from a disorder that involves repetitive movements and unwanted sounds. She is adopted by her grandparents. The family lives in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Icy suffers from a condition called Tourette syndrome. She remembers how she has had a rough time due to that condition. She started having tics and spasms at a young age. At school, her classmates used to make fun of her. Besides, some ignorant teachers like Mrs. Stilton were strict with her. Parents never wanted their children to interact with her. What they did not know is that Icy’s condition was beyond her control.

Icy’s uncontrolled outbursts compelled her grandparents to transfer her to a mental institution called Bluegrass State Hospital. At the institution, Icy is perceived as an outcast. Icy believed that she is in the wrong place since she was not mentally ill. Some facility workers like Wilma were obnoxious and insolent and used to torment her. However, others like Dr. Conroy treated her well. Subsequently, Icy starts to be home-schooled. Here, she feels lonely and doesn’t want to move out.

Nevertheless, Icy started falling for Peavy Lawson, her former classmate. Their relationship did not last for long because, at one point, she saw him as unpleasant. Her homeschooling teacher, Emily, used to encourage her to study hard. Besides, Emily used to counsel her. When her grandfather died, her grandmother encouraged her to start attending church. At the church, she discovered that she was a talented singer. Music reduced her anxieties. Fortunately, Icy went to university, where she learned about her condition officially. After completing her university education, she decided to become a therapist to help children suffering from Tourette’s syndrome.
