“Then hairs above your lip”

Icy Sparks

This account is articulated by Icy Sparks who is the protagonist of the story. She is responding to Matanni’s suspicion after realizing that she had been looking at her for a while. Before this, Matanni had been studying her closely as she spoke in response to her previous questions. She is glowing her eyes tighter glairing at Matanni's lips while talking. She has no specific reason for looking at her lips other than gathering the courage to talk to her.

“Calling attention to a person’s weakness ain’t nice”

Patanni, the grandfather

These words are said by the grandfather to warn Icy that it is not good to point out directly the shortfalls of others. Icy had looked directly at her grandmother and pointed out that she has grey hair. Patanni felt offended because grey hair is associated with an old age. Patanni still sees his wife as young not as old as it is assumed by Icy. Patanni demands Icy to apologize to his grandmother and she accepts to say sorry because her intentions are not to offend her. However, Matanni jumps in to defend Icy arguing that she is okay with the sentiments by saying that the child is not so bad. Grandmother's defense makes Icy to regain her confidence so that she can continue with the conversation.

“That ain’t the point, Tillie.”

Patanni

Patanni is not in agreement with Icy's grandmother's defense of Icy. According to Matanni, Icy is a young child and she meant no harm when she said grandma has grey hair. Patanni maintains that Icy is discourteous and she should not address the elderly just like her peers. There is a sharp contrast between the two grandparents because Patanni thinks that the elderly must be treated with the utmost respect by the young while Matanni does not see any big deal when grandchildren make fun of them.
