Icy Sparks
The protagonist of the story. She narrates her childhood experiences with her grandparents and the people she later meets in life including Joel. Her mother died when she was still a little baby and she only got the parental love from her grandparents.
Matanni
Icy’s grandmother. She is jovial and likes joking with Icy. Icy is confident when with her because she can make fun of her without any fear. Grandma knows that making fun with grandchildren is not offensive unlike the assumptions of Patanni.
Patanni
Icy’s grandfather. He is a strict grandfather who does not entertain any attempt of young children like Icy to make fun of old men. When Icy tries to say that her grandmother has grey hair, Patanni is angry and she asks Icy to apologize by force.
Joel McRoy
Joel McRoy is the first male to get interested and attracted to Icy Sparks. Despite Icy being only ten years old, she is a beautiful girl that no boy can ignore her. While at the theater, Joel enters and sits behind Icy and tells her he is sure that she has no boyfriend. Icy is carefree and she puts him off.
Peavy Lawson
Peavy is the boy that Joel claims that is in love with Icy. However, Icy is fast to dispute this by saying that she is too young to like boys. Joel insists that Icy should like Peavy because he has frog eyes like her. However, Joel is just making fun of her because her eyes are popping out like those of a frog.
Mrs. Matson
She is the proprietor of Cut’n Curl tucked into the corner of the Short Street. Icy describes her as a tall and large-boned woman. She is humane and a good woman because she offers a bottle of cold coke to Icy without asking for any payment. She also advises Icy that is not good for young children to stay idle like old many. She argues that children should always play to remain strong and focused.
Dr. Stone
He is a young doctor with an office that attends to the pregnant women, victims of accidents, ling patients and other sick people who needs medical attention. His clinic attends to all those people who do not want to travel the long distance to Lexington to seek for treatment.
Miss. Emily
This is the only person Icy Sparks believes that cannot betray her. Icy believes nobody but she has some faith that Miss Emily is trustful to some of her secrets. To many, she is a strange person who does not share much about herself with anybody and that is the reason why Icy trusts her with her secrets.
Louisa
She is Icy Sparks's mother. She died long ago while Icy was a little baby and left her under the care of her grandparents. Throughout the story, Icy only recapture’s her mother’s experiences from her grandmother’s stories.
