Chocolat (2000 film) Quotes

Quotes

You don't misbehave here. It's just not done, did you know that? If you don't go to confession, if you don't... dig your flowerbeds, or if you don't pretend, if you don't pretend... that you want nothing more in your life than to serve your husband three meals a day, and give him children, and vacuum under his ass, then... then you're... then you're crazy.

Josephine

This quote highlights the restraints in place and oppressive nature of the town on its residents, but, especially, the women of the town. Josephine embodies the social convention of a housewife and she always adheres to what is expected of her rather than what she expects from herself. The fact that she claims to think alternatively makes one 'crazy' adds to the frenzy she herself is experiencing in her mentality every day.

Comte de Reynaud

This is a condescending power play of a quote and highlights the God-given authority that Reynaud's already thinks he has over Vianne, purely due to his role as mayor of the town. He is not only belittling her profession, but also, he role as an outcasted, single-mother who has no qualms about adhering to social expectations.

I should probably warn ya: you make friends with us, you make enemies with everyone else.

Roux

This is an interesting quote, because, although Roux himself may feel like an outsider, and believes that Vianne joining him would also include her in that bracket, the irony is that she too is an outsider and has already made 'enemies with everyone' in the town, by simply being.

Once upon a time, there was a quiet little village in the French countryside, whose people believed in Tranquilité - Tranquility.

Narrator/Anouk

The narrator starts off the story in a fairytale-like manner, but of course, this is an illusion and foreshadows the turbulent events that follow the movie. By starting off this way, it plays on the concept of what a fairytale truly is. Is it the wonderful story with no problems, or is it a complex journey to gaining a happy ever after?
