    Under the mentorship of Rake, Neely emerges as the best sportsperson in Bleachers. However, during one incident, Neely hits Couch Rake because of a small argument. Rake intends to be a little on his players to ensure that they emerge as winners against the Spartans. Rake dares team players to work harder but Neely feels offended and he hits the couch breaking his hand. Later, Rake falls ill and succumbs to cancer. Neely is emotional and regretful for what he did. He realizes that he emerged as a star during his heydays because of the efforts made by Rake. During Rake's burial, Neely is given the chance of eulogizing him. He expresses his apology and thanks to the fallen hero for making him great.

    Messina High School’s fame is attributable to Rake’s efforts. Rake has couched Messina’s football team for over 34 years and all these seasons the school has emerged victorious. Rake has been a dedicated coach and he always ensures that the team undergoes strenuous exercises to warrant that it is fit for the next assignment. All team players who went through the Messina football team give praise to Rake's commitment.

    The conflict between Neely and coach Rake is the main irony in this text. Neely thinks that a coach Rake is a bad person but he later realizes that he is wrong. The irony of this conflict comes out during the death of coach Rake. Neely reflects on his life as a football player in Messina High School and gives all credit to coach Eddie Rake. Neely could be nothing in football were it not be the commitment of Rake. He realizes his mistakes and feels sorry for being stupid. The reader finds it ironic that Neely is the most affected by the death of Rake.
