Before I Fall Themes

Teenage life

All the characters of the novel are real cretins in the period of their teenage heyday – cretinism. Only Kent gives the impression of a young man, who holds promises. He is the only ray of light in the dark kingdom. It is probably dishonest to say that some silly things are described here – these things are very truthful. Most of the adolescents are stupid, angry and irritable. They all make mistakes, delude themselves, and act wrongly and selfishly. Perhaps this can be considered the norm. They are teenagers with their problems of growing up. The main thing they should know is that in spite of everything, life is the greatest value. Adolescence is a stage that everyone needs to go through, and the author masterfully describes the problems of this period, and how the characters get through with them.

Relationship psychology

Relationships are always difficult, but perhaps especially for young people. In the novel, the author shows that some characters deserve love and other characters deserve hatred. There is also the theme of friendship, which is true and real. This book is about strong friendship. It does not matter that friends are far from perfect, but Sam, Lindsay, Ally, and Elody accept each other with all their flaws. Let sometimes someone behave like a bitch, but if the reader takes a closer look, he will see that behind the mask of cold indifference there are frightened girls, who are afraid of being vulnerable and weak. There is also relationship of parents and children. Sam shows parents her warm and sincere relationship, when she understands the value of her life.

Suicide

Suicide is a common and pressing problem among adolescents. This problem is the main theme in the novel “Before I Fall”. Sam and her friends are constantly mocking Juliet Sykes. They give her a terrible nicknames “Psycho” or “Mellow Yellow” , humiliate and hint at the fact that Juliet has no place in this world. Of course, every teenager will think about suicide after such insults and bullying. Even psychologists cannot cope with this problem, because adolescents are so cruel. Nevertheless, Lauren Oliver makes it clear that sometimes such things have terrible consequences, not only for the victim, but also for the offenders.
