Before I Fall Background

Before I Fall Background

Before I Fall is Lauren Oliver's 2010 debut smash-hit young adult novel. This book follows a very popular high-school girl named Samantha ("Sam") as she is forced to relieve the day of her death - resulting from a tragic car accident - every day for a week, making new - and uncharacteristic - choices along the way in an attempt to understand what is happening to her (and why it is happening) and to try to change her grisly and unfortunate fate. It is in the style of the classic film "Groundhog Day" and shows Sam going through the five stages of grief, which ends in her acceptance of her untimely death.

Before I Fall was also adapted into a movie of the same name (released in 2017), starring Zoey Deutch, Halston Sage, Logan Miller, and Kian Lawley and directed by Ry Russo-Young. It holds a respectable 64% critic score and 57% audience score on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 3.9 out of 5 on Amazon. Reads the sites critical consensus: "Before I Fall's familiar ingredients are enlivened by a fresh YA perspective and a strong performance from emerging star Zoey Deutch."

The novel was released to very good reviews. On book review aggregator Goodreads.com, it holds a very respectable rating of 3.91 out of 5 stars; on Amazon, it holds an even better rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars. Reads a positive review on The Guardian, "I recommend Before I Fall because it is one of those YA books you have to read at least once in your life."
