Philip Bentley is a protestant minister and a preacher. When he was young, he was very good at painting and wanted to be an artist. But when he realizes that his family is not able to support his dream to be an artist, he has become a clergyman in order to earn a living for his family. Philip is the husband of Mrs. Bentley. His attitude toward his wife is unfair.
Mrs. Bentley is the protagonist of the novel. She has a habit of writing her day to day life. She is married to Philip Bentley. She is an indulgent lady and a loving wife to her husband. Mrs. Bentley married life is full of chaos because she is unable to bear a child. She gets depressed when she finds out that her husband cheated on her. In this story, the writer does not reveal her name throughout the novel.
