Alice in the Cities Summary

The story involves a German journalist called Philip Winter. Winter has begun writing a book about the U.S. however, he has outlived his stay in the U.S and should get back to Germany. He is trying to book a flight when he meets Lisa and her daughter, Alice. Consequently, they become friends instantly. In a short while, Lisa excuses herself and leaves Alice in the hands of Philip. Lisa informs them that she wants to mend fences with her boyfriend. Lisa assures the pair to meet up with her in Amsterdam. However, after arriving at the airport, Lisa is nowhere to be found.

The pair decide to go to Germany to locate Alice’s grandparents. In Germany, Alice cannot remember where her grandparents live. As a result, Philip decides to take her to the nearest police station. Here, Alice escapes and follows Philip. She tells him that she has remembered where her grandparents live. The pair become acquainted with one another. However, after getting to where Alice said her grandparents live, the two discover that Alice’s grandparents no longer live there.

Fortunately, the police officer locates them. He informs them that Lisa has been found. Consequently, they go to the police station. Nonetheless, Alice does not want Philip to leave her. She gives him money and the two board a train. Typically, their bond is so strong that they don’t want to be separated.
