Alice in the Cities Irony

Alice in the Cities Irony

Writer’s block

Philip has been commissioned to write an article on the American experience as a European tourist. However, he suffers from writer’s block and lacks a creative take to write for the reportage. Consequently, he only takes photos of the American landscape due to his writing block. Ironically, after traveling back to Europe with Alice he suddenly gains inspiration and ideas to put on paper. His creativity flourishes away from the intended location following an unexpected journey.

Irony of responsibility

Philip has misgivings about taking the duty of caring for the nine-year-old Alice. Every attempt to relieve himself of any more responsibility in Europe only draws Alice back to him. He takes on the responsibility of a temporary custodian for a longer time than he was willing or expected to. Thus, Philip ends up being an adequate caretaker for an individual that felt incapable beforehand.

Irony of trickery

The search for Alice’s grandmother in Germany turns into a hopeless pursuit that bears no fruits. However, Alice later reveals that she has withheld information and misled Philip about the actual address. This is an instance of dramatic irony in the film. Furthermore, Philip tricks Alice to think he blew the lights on Empire State Building through a trick.

Irony of friendship

Lisa is the only connection between Alice and Philip after her sudden and random request. Philip is not ready for the responsibility once he accompanies her to Amsterdam and Germany. On the other hand, Alice is left with a total stranger by her mother. However, this situation fosters the unlikely friendship from this unexpected scenario.

Grandmother’s address

During the search for the address both Alice and Philip and even the police offer suggestions that end up incorrect. Philip guesses the first location out of a whim which becomes one of the many wrong guesses. Alice on the other hand is intentionally withholding information to spend more time roaming with Philip. The final suggestion by the police offers much hope but the trip takes them to a house that belongs to a different family.
