A Single Man (Film)

A Single Man (Film) Analysis

This film is a journey of a single day in the life of George, a man who seemingly has everything to the world around him, but who's lost everything after Jim, his partner has been killed in a car accident. George has decided to kill himself, but instead of choosing to make a rash decision he decides to experience the day one last time, but deeply. He chooses to feel and when he sees beauty he spends time with it and acknowledges it. We see this when the color of the film turns vibrant and the colors are enhanced. We get to experience the presence George chooses throughout the film.

George is also mourning. He's grieving the loss of the love of his life and his inability to have been able to say goodbye as Jim's family wouldn't allow him to come to the funeral. George has an enormous amount of feeling and nowhere to put it. This is why his suit is so important, it is his shield from the world, but also the shield that keeps anything inside of him from coming out. So, when Kenny appears at the bar later that night and he goes skinny dipping with him, it is his armor that he's removed and this begins the process of George wanting to live again. A choice he makes at the end of their evening together.

Though George dies of a heart attack the next morning it is symbolic as it was not life he was taking, but instead his death was natural. This shows us that death is always on time and we have the strength to endure one more day through the deep pain of loss.
