Originally published in a 1972 issue of Ms. Magazine, X: A Fabulous Child's Story by Lois Gould is considered to be a pioneer in trans literature. Using a children's story format, it follows the tale of a baby called X, whose gender has been hidden from the world. Despite being raised with love by adoptive parents Mr. and Mrs. Jones, who agree to the rules set forth by a group of scientists studying X's growth, X is met with resistance by other children and their parents.
