X: A Fabulous Child's Story Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

Although X: A Fabulous Child's Story began as a short story published in Ms. Magazine, it spawned other variations. In 1978, Gould reprinted the story as a picture book, with illustrations from Jacqueline Chwast. In 2016, an animated short adapted the story as well. Outside of these adaptations, X has much in common with Gould's other works, including her memoir Mommy Dressing: A Love Story, After a Fashion and her 1976 novel A Sea Change. Other important works about gender fluidity include Virginia Woolf's Orlando, Manuel Puig's Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Gabriel(a) by Raúl Vallejo Corral.
