Three Sisters Lesson Plan

Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

  1. 1

Students will observe the way Chekhov adheres to, and deviates from, traditional theater practices of his time.

  2. 2

Students will discuss how a “grass is always greener” approach to life manifests in the ennui felt by the Prozorov sisters in their provincial life.

  3. 3

Students will explore how Chekhov uses symbols—such as the piano and the clock—to subtly enforce his themes and convey complex sentiments to the viewer.

  4. 4

Students will familiarize themselves with the modernism movement, and how its philosophy manifests throughout Three Sisters.
