The Sorrows of Satan Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Greed (Allegory)

The tale of Tempest's choice at inheriting the will is one of greed. The problems he encounters along with his newfound wealth become ways of stating that greed has its consequences.

Lucio's offer (motif)

When Lucio offers to help Tempest with making the right choices with his new wealth and status, it is suspicious. Indeed, the fact that Tempest took him up on the offer is naïve as one knows not to accept help from strangers.

The letters (motif)

The three letters that tempest receives at the start represent the different choices he could have made. Each letter would have led to a different path. This is highlighting that in life, we can choose our own path.

Poverty (symbol)

Poverty is a symbol of honesty and virtue. When Tempest is rich he succumbs to negative traits such as pride and envy. As a poor man, he is happy and remains true to himself.
