    Describe and then discuss Sherlock Holmes’ characterization.

    Drawing on quotes from the text, consider Holmes as a character: his personality, behavior/mannerisms, motivation, et cetera. What is the nature of his relationship with Watson? What does he care about and prioritize? What exactly is his job? Students may bring this question into conversation with media depictions of Holmes or Holmes-like characters with which they are familiar. What might be some aspects of Conan Doyle’s Holmes that are unfamiliar or unexpected?
