Many elements of this work (as this Lesson Plan directly addresses) are racist, colonialist, and similarly problematic. Depending on classroom dynamics, the teacher may wish to warn students about this ahead-of-time. To the extent that a positive and respectful classroom setting can be maintained around these topics, this text can actually serve as a very good opportunity to discuss the interplay between racism in older literature and modern issues of race, colonialism, and white- / western-centric culture.
