The Rise of Skywalker Themes

Family

In the film, Rey is revealed to be Palpatine’s granddaughter. This revelation is devastating to her. She is against the dark side but her bloodline is the dark side. This becomes conflicting for Rey who has to choose between her biological family and her newfound family among friends and people who care for her deeply. Rey chooses not to be defined by her blood but by her will to fight for the people he considers family. Throughout the film, she seems to be in search of her identity. In the end, Rey proclaims herself as a member of the Skywalker family.

Fear

Fearing that she might turn to the dark side, Rey hides in Ahch To. Unknowingly, she mirrors the actions of his teacher. Luke appears and advises her not to make the same mistakes he did. Succumbing to fear will only drive her closer to the dark side. Facing those fears and confronting your enemy is the only way to truly become a Jedi.

Redemption

Ren is on a path to live up to his grandfather, Darth Vader. He disregards his Skywalker bloodline. The path he's on seems impossible to come back from. After his mother dies, Ren has a moment to reconsider what path he wanted to take. In the film, no matter what you have done, there’s always a path to redemption waiting for you. Ren reclaims his identity as Ben Solo and goes against Palpatine. He gives his life to Rey in a show of redemption and affection.
