The Family Chao Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The notice plank

The notice plank symbolizes an oblique form of communication used by Mr. Leo and his wife whenever they squabble. Mr. Leo is a narcissistic man who believes that he is always right. Therefore, he often disagrees with his wife on several issues, including the daily running of the Fine Chao Restaurant. Whenever they argue, they communicate by writing on the notice plank. Chao's children know that the work of the bulletin board is silent communication.

Chinese culture

The Chinese culture in the small town of Haven is symbolized by Fine Chao Restaurant. The restaurant serves Chinese food. Most Chinese people who want to feel at home regularly visit Fine Chao Restaurant. The restaurant has a Chinese menu, Chinese paintings, and plays Chinese music.

Thoughtlessness

Thoughtlessness is symbolized by Dogou's laziness and unwillingness to work. Dagou is very comfortable because he knows he is the primary heir to his parent's properties. Dogou's younger brothers, James and Ming, are hard-working and believe in creating their own wealth.
