The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes Imagery

Holmes’ Room

Holmes’ room is described as a mess of all sorts of eccentric things. He has a pile of papers, which he would never throw for the fear of losing some valuable data. There were scientific charts on his wall, a wooden bench charred with acids, which he probably used for his chemistry work, a violin which he played when he needed to relax, and signs of his drug addiction all over. Not to mention, his various tools he used in his investigation. The image this produces is of an overwhelming, crowded, dingy, smoky room which could produce interest and anxiety at the same time. Holmes’ room is a window to his mind, there is organised chaos. Everything there has a purpose and is put out in open for him to use when the need strikes.

Professor Presbury’s Animal instincts

Professor Presbury is witnessed by his secretary, Trevor Bennet, to crawl like an animal in the dead of night. He is said to have been crawling on his hands and knees with much ease as if this was his natural position. It was not a crawl a man might do while looking for things, it seemed to be animal-like as his face was sunk between his hands. The image this produces brings supernatural elements in one’s mind, as Trevor Bennet later proposes, and increases a sense of foreboding.

Ferguson’s Ancient Farmhouse

Holmes and Watson visit the Ferguson farmhouse to investigate the ‘vampire’ and they find the farmhouse to be old and grim. The architecture was old as was the building. Everything was worn and looked decaying. The building itself looked it might crumble at any moment. The image the description conveys is of an ancient house, where bad spirits might come alive. This just alleviates the supernatural factor of the case.

Nathan Garrideb’s Personal Museum

Nathan Garrideb had converted his apartment into a personal museum. It was crowded with specimens, instruments and artefacts of all kinds. So vast was the variety of the things, that Watson found it difficult to guess the man’s interests. This produced a sensation of overwhelming, as they were trying to guess what John Garrideb was looking for in Nathan’s apartment. With such a number of artefacts with no single subject, it became difficult to guess what John Garrideb was after.

The Haunted Crypt

The Haunted Crypt is said to be an old ruined chapel near the Shoscombe Old Place. It is a very old crypt where Falder ancestors were once buried. The crypt is now not used and has fallen in decrepit. It is dark, damp and has acquired a notorious reputation among the villagers, because of its condition. No one dare to go their alone. It invokes a sense of being haunted, as if some bad spirit is around the place and increases the mystery of the story.
