Chapter 44 - Particle Physics and Cosmology - Problems - Exercises - Page 1521: 44.54

Answer

See explanation.

Work Step by Step

a. Use Table 44.3 for data. The smallest mass is $\Sigma^-$ and the largest mass is $\Omega^-$. b. For this part, we apply conservation of energy. The kinetic energy of the products is due to the loss of rest energy. Compare the masses of reactants and products in the 4 decay modes. We see that the largest mass loss, and thus greatest KE, corresponds to the decay of the $\Delta^{++}$. The smallest mass loss, and thus least KE, corresponds to the decay of the $\Omega^{-}$.
