Chapter 44 - Particle Physics and Cosmology - Problems - Exercises - Page 1521: 44.44

Answer

See explanation.

Work Step by Step

Charge must be conserved. The total kinetic energy comes from the decrease in mass-energy. The rest energies are given in Table 44.3. a. Charge is conserved, so the decay products are neutral overall. There are 2 possibilities, $\pi^0\pi^0\pi^0$ and $\pi^0\pi^+\pi^-$. b. The starting particle has rest energy of 547.3 MeV. For the first possibility, the final rest energy is 3(135.0 MeV), so the difference is 547.3MeV-3(135.0 MeV) = 142 MeV. For the second possibility, the final rest energy is 135.0 MeV+2(139.6 MeV), so the difference is 547.3MeV- 135.0 MeV-2(139.6 MeV) = 133 MeV.
