Work Step by Step

Fossil fuel power plants Merits: Tried and tested technology. These plants initially cost less to construct. Technologically accessible to practically any country. Disadvantages: There is a limited supply of fossil fuels. Mining and drilling for coal and oil is dangerous and not environmentally friendly. These plants pollute the atmosphere and release greenhouse gases. Nuclear fission power plants Merits: Do not release greenhouse gases. Do not pollute the air. technology is mature, and well-understood. Disadvantages: Are relatively expensive to construct. Produce thermal pollution (hot water and air). Storing the radioactive waste is a real physical and political problem. Accidents tend to be destructive and can potentially affect thousands/millions of people. Nuclear fusion power plants Merits: Do not release greenhouse gases. Do not pollute the air. Produce little radioactive waste. Disadvantages: Are the most expensive to research and construct. Technology is still under development.
