Chapter 18 - Electric Currents - Problems - Page 523: 53

Answer

See work below.

Work Step by Step

a. The average power is 2.2 hp. The maximum power is twice that, or 4.4 hp (see Figure 18–22). Convert to watts. $$4.4hp\frac{746W}{hp}\approx 3300W$$ b. Use the average power and the rms voltage to find the maximum current. $$\overline{P}=I_{rms}V_{rms}=\frac{I_{peak}}{\sqrt{2}}V_{rms}$$ $$ I_{peak}=\frac{\overline{P}\sqrt{2}}{V_{rms}}$$ $$=\frac{(2.2hp)(746W/hp)\sqrt{2}}{240V}=9.7A$$
