Chapter 34 - Ray Optics - Conceptual Questions - Page 989: 7

Answer

The image still appears on the screen but the image is less bright.

Work Step by Step

The light rays from the tip of the object will pass through various parts of the lens and meet at the inverted tip of the image. The light rays from the middle of the object will pass through various parts of the lens and meet at the inverted middle of the image. The light rays from the base of the object will pass through various parts of the lens and meet at the inverted base of the image. When the top half of the lens is covered, the light rays will still pass through the bottom half of the lens and meet at the same locations. However, half of the light will be blocked, so the image will have less intensity. The image still appears on the screen but the image is less bright.
