Suppose after getting hit by the player the ball starts moving at constant velocity. The player who starting running towards left was initially at rest. Hence to catch up with ball"s speed he needs to accelerate towards left. Then when it reaches near the ball, he needs to move with the same velocity as that of ball until he catches it. The motion diagram corresponding to this i is given below. V1, the initial velocity with which he starts moving , then slowly the velocity increases as can be seen the length of arrow is increasing. And when it reaches near the ball and tries to catch it he moves with constant velocity i.e V4.
